Susan’s Creation Process for Pendants

Pendants became part of my work when other designers began asking for components from my necklaces to use in their own creations. What started as a side offering has grown into a thriving part of my creative endeavors, and I love how it continues to evolve.

Design ideas ping me all day and into the night. Sometimes they begin as quiet impressions—an image, a memory, or a feeling that surfaces while working in the studio. Other times it’s a figure from mythology, an animal form, or a natural pattern that sparks my imagination during a quiet moment in the evening. I follow where the inspiration leads. A sketch may sit for a while, or a new idea might arise suddenly, turning me in an entirely different direction. The creative process has its own rhythm, and I’ve learned to trust it.

Pendants have a long history across cultures. Worn for thousands of years, they’ve served as amulets, symbols of status, tokens of faith, or expressions of identity. In ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece, pendants were often crafted from precious materials and inscribed with sacred meaning. In many indigenous cultures, they were made from bone, shell, or wood, connecting the wearer to nature, ancestors, and the spirit world. Even now, their symbolism continues to carry deep personal and cultural significance.

My own pendants reflect what I care most about: nature, animals, spiritual symbols, and sacred stories. Some honor the grace of birds, the presence of goddesses like Kuan Yin, or the protective power of dragons. Whatever I design, the meaning often reveals itself during the carving process. Each piece is hand-carved from bone, mammoth tusk, or tropical wood by master Balinese artisans, and some are set with gemstones or silver. Whether chosen for personal meaning or simple beauty, a pendant can quietly reflect something within you.

Find one that feels like yours, and let it become part of your journey.
